IME published a new analysis on the EU regulation of health data

The article published in the 2024 special issue on Digital Health of the IME (Journal of Healthcare Leaders), co-authored by the president of HMA, Dr Péter Gaál, presents how the EU aims to regulate the security of the secondary use of health data through the European Health Data Space (EHDS) regulation.

The role of big data analysis and algorithm-based data processing has become increasingly significant, particularly in the healthcare sector. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of data-driven digital solutions, prompting the European Union to develop a comprehensive legislative framework. A key initiative in this effort is the European Health Data Space (EHDS) regulation, which aims to establish a secure and unified approach to health data usage. The new regulation seeks to empower citizens by giving them control over their electronic health data while also facilitating research, innovation, and policymaking. The analysis highlights key challenges facing the EHDS, including legal harmonization issues and the role of citizens in data altruism.
