Our vice president, Dr. Tamás Joó and his co-authors published an international research report in the September issue of The Lancet, entitled ‘Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance 1990–2021: a systematic analysis with forecasts to 2050’.
The comprehensive research examined the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) between 1990 and 2021. In 2021, an estimated 4.71 million deaths were attributable to bacterial AMR. The situation is projected to increase further in 2050, with 1.91 million AMR-attributable deaths and 8.22 million AMR-related deaths worldwide.
The study draws attention to the importance of preventing infections, vaccinations, correctly using antibiotics, and developing new drugs.
