HMA experts co-author an article on pandemic COVID-19 in The Lancet Global Health

HMA’s Vice President, Dr. Tamás Joó, and Dr. Tamás Palicz co-authored an article on the COVID-19 pandemic in the March 2023 issue of The Lancet Global Health.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted global gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries, as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. The study aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic, characterize the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic, and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness.

This is the most recent study to combine projections of necessary funding with the available and expected funding data to examine potential deficits in fund availability for pandemic preparedness.
