The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that health and health care should be considered a top priority area of national security. Health security risks can only be addressed with resilient health systems, which cannot be established without innovation in health data science. These are the themes of an article in the July 2021 issue of Scientia et Securitas, authored by Dr. Péter Gaál, the President of HMA, and co-authored by HMA Vice President Dr. Tamás Joó.
The publication presents two case studies on how analyzing large operational databases can help protect against epidemics. Mobile cell information analysis is the most effective tool for tracking mass population movements and, thus, for decision-support analysis of the impact of quarantine measures, while network analysis of anti-vaccine social media activity helps in the design and implementation of immunization campaigns.
In their paper, the authors argue that the digital transformation of health care, based on the explosive development of information and communication technologies, is of key importance to the establishment of resilient health systems that can efficiently cope with the challenges posed by the rapid environmental changes generated by the 21st-century societal transformation.
