The Lancet Neurology’s article presents the burdens of stroke and its risk factors

The publication, written on international collaboration in October 2024, included Dr. Péter Gaál, president of MEMT, and Dr. Tamás Joó, vice president, among its authors. The article summarizes research conducted between 1990 and 2021, which assessed global, regional, and national burdens of stroke and its risk factors.

The studies show that the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, has nearly doubled worldwide during the examined period, and the stroke mortality rate remains high. The study highlights key risk factors contributing to stroke, such as high blood pressure, obesity, elevated fasting blood sugar, regular consumption of sugary drinks, low physical activity, high systolic blood pressure, and diets low in polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids.

In addition to smoking, air pollution also contributes to subarachnoid haemorrhages. The latest data reveals that in 2021, air pollution was responsible for 11.9% of stroke-related deaths. Researchers emphasize that due to the link between air pollution and climate change, urgent action is needed to reduce environmental impacts to mitigate the occurrence of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
