What Do Patients Search for Online About Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery?

Our MEMT colleague Lívia Lengyel and her co-authors published a paper in the Journal of Orthopaedic Reports on 2 June 2025. The study explores what people search for online and what health-related information they seek about knee and hip replacement surgery.

The research examined the most common search terms in four languages across six countries, classifying queries into categories such as the preoperative period, types of surgery, implants, rehabilitation and complications.

The findings show that interest in knee replacement surgery is considerably higher than interest in hip replacement surgery, particularly in Hungary and the United States.

The results presented in the paper may help physicians and healthcare providers better understand patients’ information needs and prepare more detailed, better-structured materials addressing the most important questions for those awaiting surgery.
